Polska Skakavitsa is one of those places that lies a step away from Sofia, yet feels like another world. The waterfall drops among the sheer cliffs of the Zemen Gorge, near the village of Razhdavitsa and the town of Zemen, about eighty kilometres from the capital. It was declared a protected natural landmark back in 1968.
We set off along a marked eco-trail and walk beside the river, through shaded forest, until the sound of the water tells us we are close. The path is calm and pleasant, and the sight of the falling water is worth every step.
The Zemen Gorge, carved by the Struma river, holds other quiet corners too, which we explore depending on the season and the mood of the group. This is a route we repeat several times a year, most often in spring, when the waterfall is at its fullest.
