Trip Cancellation insurance is voluntary. It reimburses the non-refundable sums you paid in advance if the trip is cancelled for reasons beyond your control that could not be foreseen when the policy was taken out. A non-refundable sum is a prepayment that the tour operator, hotel, carrier or another provider cannot return.

The insurance is for people up to the age of 80 on the date it is taken out, in good health, who have a holiday or business trip ahead of them in Bulgaria or abroad. It covers Bulgarian and foreign citizens for paid bookings and prepaid trips organised by a licensed tour operator.

Covered reasons for cancellation:

• sudden illness, accident or death of the insured person;
• sudden illness or accident of a close relative requiring hospital or home treatment, or the death of a close relative;
• material damage to the insured person's home or business premises from fire, burglary or a natural disaster, serious enough to require their presence there;
• transport strikes that were not known or expected when the insurance was taken out.

The insurance must be taken out on the day of the booking and the first payment, whether a deposit or the full price. If you booked without paying, it is taken out on the day of the first payment. It comes into force on the day it is taken out, can run for 3 to 365 days, and the cover ends on the date the trip begins.

The limit of liability for each insured person is the full price of the trip, even if you pay only part of it when the insurance is taken out. For group insurance the limit is the same for everyone in the group. The premium depends on the sum insured and the period, according to the insurer's current tariff, and is paid once when the insurance is taken out.
