Founded in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila, one of Bulgaria's most revered saints, the monastery has been an important spiritual, cultural and literary centre for more than a thousand years.
In 1983, Rila Monastery was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, recognising its exceptional importance to human history and culture.
