Shilyoko, a Panoramic Peak in Kraishte
Climb Shilyoko through abandoned hamlets and panoramic places in Kraishte, then visit the St Petka Monastery in Penkyovtsi.

Join us to discover the rarely visited but exceptionally panoramic Shilyoko Peak in Penkyovska Mountain, one of Bulgaria’s places where silence, wide horizons and traces of the past go together.
On our hike, we try to piece together Kraishte’s mountain puzzle, identify nearby and distant mountains, look towards Bulgaria and Serbia and enjoy the spaciousness that high panoramic places offer.
There is more to Shilyoko than views...
🥾 We pass through long-abandoned hamlets where nature is gradually reclaiming human traces.
🌲 We talk about history, nature and life in this little-known region.
🗺️ We try to read the landscape and understand what makes Kraishte’s variety of mountains, ridges and valleys so interesting.
⛪ We finish by visiting the St Petka Monastery in Penkyovtsi and learning the intriguing legend about its past.

📏 Distance: 9 km
⬆️ Elevation: +370 m / -370 m
⏱️ Duration: around 6 hours
🌦️ Depending on the season and current conditions, the ground may be wet, muddy, slippery or snowy. Please prepare for changeable weather.

We travel in private cars, organised as a carpool.

🎒 Our advice: Do not underestimate equipment simply because this is not one of the hardest hikes. Mountain weather can change quickly, and suitable footwear and clothing are your best friend.
